About Lesson
Before I can tell my life what I want to do with it, I must listen to my life telling me who I am … vocation does not come from a voice “out there” calling me to become something I am not. It comes from a voice “in there” calling me to be the person I was born to be, to fulfill the original selfhood given me at birth by God.
Parker Palmer
- This is about a journey to discover and understand self. When we are born we find ourselves interacting with this world, without much else, to go by but what our parents, environment and culture offers us. Therefore we learn everything about ourselves, others and environment from them. If the environment we find ourselves in is supportive and loving, then we learn positive things and vice versa. Often what we learn about others and ourselves is based on people’s opinion and weaknesses. Therefore, our definition of who we are is defective,
because it is based on people’s experiences and opinions. - However, our identity is separate from people’s opinions, our experiences, the environment or even the culture. Depending on how you look at it I believe that the truth about who I am can only be defined by the creator. Only the manufacturer can define a product and its purpose, it is only God who can reveal to us the truth of who we are and the purpose for which he created us.
